In this first post we’ll start with Build Community.

Journal prompts for exploring your experiences around our work lives and the pandemic. What changed? What changes might have been positive? What changes might have been stressful? How will you think about work life different going forward?

This post has some suggested journaling prompts for thinking about your relationships with friends and family, and how it might have changed during the pandemic.

The work we do focuses on connecting with ourselves and others, to form the relationships that bring true meaning and fulfillment into our lives. We work to rewrite the stories that have kept us small and in opposition to others, and replace them with “new narratives” that connect us with ourselves, each other, and the wider world around us.

We have a new vision for the New Narrative. That vision is for a community actively learning and working together to make our world more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable for all.

We’ve decided that it’s time for The New Narrative to develop a new mission, one that builds upon everything that’s been gained, but to also chart an ambitious path forward and bring something new to the community.

The New Narrative took a break for most of the pandemic, but now that things are opening up again we’re getting ready to relaunch the program--but with some changes.

How can mutual improvement be incorporated into The New Narrative? What do we want to learn and how can we support each other in doing it.

Could The New Narrative serve as a reconception of the church? What would be the benefit of a “third community” institution in our lives that works to help us all learn, grow, and become more empowered as the people we are?

An important aspect of the vision for The New Narrative has always been to build it out as a community. No matter what the specifics of the event or interaction are, we genuinely hope that real friendships can emerge from the events we produce.

Stories are the building blocks of our mind, society, worldview, and relationships. We connect with each other through the stories we share. We understand the world through the stories we believe. We relate to ourselves through the stories we tell ourselves. Storytelling is central to The New Narrative.

This will be the first of many blog posts that will explore the mission, core values, and ideas of The New Narrative.

A lot has changed in the world over the last couple of months. We want to do a pulse check on our New Narrative community to see where we’re at and understand how we can better serve this community going forward. Ever since the George Floyd murder and the Black Lives Matter protests began a couple of weeks ago, I’ve certainly gone through my own process of better understanding my part in systematic racism, how I can do better going forward, and how I intend to personally react to the situation now. While I’m working through all that for myself, I also have another set of questions about how The New Narrative should respond to what’s going on too. I’d love to open up a discussion on this with anybody who has thoughts to share.

We’re opening the call for people who have been regular speakers, volunteers, attendees, and contributors to the New Narrative in the past to take a step forward and get more involved. How can we work together to get your vision, talents, and message out there? What would you like to do?
